    In a preregistered study by Stanford RegLab and HAI researchers, Lexis+ AI and Ask Practical Law AI hallucinated on about 1 in 6 test queries (17%), and Westlaw AI-Assisted Research on about 1 in 3 (33%). The tools were tested in spring 2024 (Magesh et al., Journal of Empirical Legal Studies, 2025).

    In Garner v. Kadince, 2025 UT App 80 (May 22, 2025), the Utah Court of Appeals sanctioned lawyers whose petition cited a case ChatGPT had invented, and noted that AI use in legal filings ‘has not been previously addressed by Utah courts.’

What if CaseRead gets something wrong?

Every answer cites its sources, in your files and in the public law, so you can open each one. The Hallucination Shield runs two checks on every citation you give it: does the source exist, and does it support the claim it’s cited for. Each citation gets a check score out of 100, and anything CaseRead can’t match to a source it retrieved is flagged, not asserted. You stay the lawyer: check a flagged citation before you rely on it.

Is my client data used to train AI models?

No. CaseRead runs no model training or fine-tuning on your data, and our AI providers’ commercial terms exclude it from their training. Each firm’s documents live in their own database schema, with row-level security inside it.

Does it work in Microsoft Word?

Yes. CaseRead for Word; its edits follow your Track Changes setting. In CaseRead’s own editor, every AI edit is tracked.

What does the Free plan include?

How does Opinion 512 affect billing for work done with CaseRead?

ABA Formal Opinion 512 (July 29, 2024) covers fees too. It also says lawyers who bill hourly must bill their actual time and may not charge clients to learn a tool they will use regularly.
